The road sign is a symbol whose purpose is to help regulate road traffic. The purpose of cinema is to regulate people’s minds. Violence is one of the chief instruments that cinema uses to beget aggression in spectators, who are flooded daily by rivers of blood and offered thousands of shootings and explosions to watch.
“Cinema Sign” is a sign that aims to make us think about whether the direction we follow is the right one. The work explores the most tender element of violence: the slap in the face. On the backdrop of tonnes of senseless aggression, a slap in the face appears as a tender caress.
A road sign has been transformed into a “cinema sign”. On a sign hangs a visor from an old camera. When the viewer lifts it and peeks into the hole behind, he or she sees a monitor that projects “Tenderness”, a video-and-sound work pieced together from a multitude of cut episodes that feature slaps in the face that, edited as to appear in consequence, form a work of music.
